Quick answer

Community solar in Delaware takes four steps. First, check that Delmarva Power sends your bill. Second, have one call with us about the terms. Third, if you want to go ahead, you sign with the solar provider, which enrolls you. Fourth, a solar credit appears on a later Delmarva bill. Nothing is installed at your home.

What is community solar?

You subscribe to a share of a solar project in Delmarva Power's Delaware territory. Delmarva credits your bill for your share of the project's output. You pay the project a monthly subscription for those credits, and by law it must cost less than the credits are worth.

Community solar is a program created by Delaware law and regulated by the PSC (the Delaware Public Service Commission). Only customers with a Delmarva Power account in Delaware can join.

What do I need to have ready for the call?

  • A recent Delmarva Power bill. The name near the top should be yours.
  • Whether you buy your electricity supply from a company other than Delmarva. It changes how the supply part of your credit is valued. See supplier vs community solar.
  • Your questions about price, billing and cancelling.

Only share your Delmarva account number with a caller who has said who they are and who they work with.

Why do I get two bills today, and when does that change?

Two bills today, one bill later. Today most subscribers get two bills: the Delmarva bill, which shows your solar credit, and a separate bill from the project for your subscription. No start date for one combined bill has been announced.

Common questions

Do I still pay Delmarva?

Yes. You stay with Delmarva. The credit is valued at the per-kWh distribution and supply charges on your rate schedule. Fixed charges are not offset, so you still get a Delmarva bill.

Can renters join?

Yes, if the Delmarva account and meter are in your own name. If electricity is included in your rent, your landlord is the customer. See community solar for renters.

Can I change my mind after signing?

You have 3 days after you sign to cancel with no penalty. See cancelling or moving for the rest of the rules.

How many projects can I join?

Up to 4. Your credits are capped at 110% of your expected use, based on the average of your 2 previous 12-month periods when you sign up.
